Orphan to a Blessing

A Journey of Resilience and Hope

A Legacy of Hope and Healing

I was only twelve months old when my father passed away. He was my grandmother’s firstborn and her only son. She had five children, but in the cruel grip of the HIV epidemic of the 1990s, death took them all within a single year. One by one, I watched them slip away, leaving my grandmother and me behind, bound together by grief and survival.

With no one else left, my grandmother took me in and did the only thing she knew how—she kept going. But instead of letting sorrow consume her, she turned her pain into a mission. She opened her home to abandoned children, welcoming every lost soul that came her way. The police would bring them, sometimes with nothing but a sack of posho and beans. What began as a handful of children soon grew into an orphanage with 700 desperate, hungry kids, all looking to her for love and guidance.

Survival was a daily battle. Food was scarce. We scrambled for anything to eat—sometimes stealing jackfruit from the community, sometimes sneaking into weddings and local parties just to fill our empty stomachs. On the lucky days, we found odd jobs to earn a few coins. But through it all, my grandmother’s resilience never wavered. She carried all of us, giving us the only thing she had left—hope.

A Journey of Healing and Transformation

Then, a miracle happened. A UK-based charity discovered me and decided to sponsor my education. For over thirteen years, they paid my tuition, lifting a weight that had once seemed impossible to bear. It was through their generosity that I dared to dream. I had witnessed too much suffering, too much loss. I knew, deep in my heart, that I wanted to become a doctor—to stand on the frontlines of the same battle that had stolen my family.

Years later, that dream became my reality. I became a doctor. But I didn’t stop there. I founded Calvary Medical Center (CMC), a project dedicated to restoring hope and making a difference in Uganda’s healthcare system. We provide free and affordable medical care to those who need it most, ensuring that no one is left to suffer alone.

But healthcare is only part of the struggle. In Uganda, only 18% of people have access to clean water, and those who do spend nearly 29% of their income just to get it. I knew that if we truly wanted to transform lives, we had to start with the basics. That’s why we launched CMC Water Company, a project committed to bridging the gap by drilling clean water wells and creating large-scale water systems that bring safe, piped water to communities.

My journey—from a starving orphan to a doctor and a changemaker—has been anything but easy. But every hardship, every struggle, and every moment of hunger shaped me into who I am today. I am proof that even in the darkest of places, hope can rise. And now, through CMC, I dedicate my life to ensuring that no child, no family, and no community has to suffer the way I once did.

Because hope is not just something we dream about. It is something we build, together.

Beyond my work, my greatest joy comes from my family. I am now married and blessed with five wonderful children, one of whom is adopted. Their love and laughter remind me every day of the power of resilience and the importance of creating a better future for the next generation. Through them, I find renewed strength to continue my mission of bringing hope and healing to those in need.
